It's difficult for me to understand either question, but those are the
only possibilities that I can parse from your sentence.

it also seems grep doesnt like relational db's. when i run it over a flat
file, it works fine. running it over PF with fields give me "not supported"
message.

This shouldn't be surprising. grep was specifically designed to work
on plain text. It's a Unix program, after all.

In fact, I'm slightly surprised that FNDSTRPDM works on data PFs, but
I know it does, because I tried it myself.
