Rich,

If I may go on a slight tangent.

Not all zip file compressors are created equal, and I would expect (but
never tested) that jar does not create the smallest possible zip binaries.
It probably has the advantage of being the most likely thing to be
installed on an IBM i that can create zip files.

If you want to make the smallest zip files possible, 7zip is the way to go.
7zip can make regular zip files that windows and OSX have built in support
for opening as well as its own 7z format. There are AIX binaries here
http://www.perzl.org/aix/index.php?n=Main.P7zip

tldr; install p7zip above, make the zip files from QSH with that, and you
will get smaller zip files than the jar program.

JAR is a java file format, and a tool to create that file format. You

documentation, the Oracle docs are probably the best.

Subject: QSHELL JAR Documentation

I just found a nice article in the Midrange Archives about how to zip
an
IFS file using the STRQSH command with JAR. I'm trying to find
documentation for the JAR function to better understand how this
works and
what IBM i OS features need to be installed in order to support it.

Does anyone have any documentation on how this works?

I'm not finding much at the IBM Knowledge Center.
