And a classic one from here.
Take a file here with a few million rows. Summarize one column breaking
at another. For example GL detail into GL summary by account number.
Original design was:
Read detail
Chain to summary.
If break was there
Update subtotal
Otherwise
Create new break
Repeat until all detail was processed.

This did a lot of I/O's on the summary file.

I changed it to sort the detail by the break column and only write out at
break time. Cut an hour long process down to a couple of minutes.
