I think we're getting somewhere.
There's a difference between a 'basic' predicate, (like =)
and a BETWEEN predicate.
In a basic predicate the types must be the same.
In a BETWEEN predicate it will jumble between the two as documented in the
"Rules for result data types" below

One could try CASTing like crazy to verify if this is the situation.
