First shops I worked in only had numeric only keyboards. Alpha keyboard almost doubled the price in the UK so people stayed away from them. Didn’t even have an interpreter to print the card content on the top.

To this day I can still remember the fingering for every letter and use it to create passwords - much to Susan’s annoyance as she grew up with full alpha keyboards.

Back in the day a good keypunch operator didn't need letters on the thing. They stared at what they were inputting and the keyboard was simply a blur. My father would modify IBM 029s by swapping a couple pulleys to make them run faster in order to keep up with the best clerks. Only worked until the machine had some wear on it. After that swap it back and give that machine to someone of average skills. :-)

Me I'm much closer to the Columbus method: "Search and discover." :-)
