I would think folks are using it because that is what IBM recommends.
IBM does tout it as a more full-featured and reliable way to download
things from IBM than "regular" FTP. And maybe it is, I don't know. I
don't use it. (Of course, I practically never download anything from

I would suggest
choosing FTP downloads and using a plugin like Firefox's DownThemAll:

Without the TitleCasing, I can't help but to read it as "download the
mall". Which might be cool if you have sufficient bandwidth. :)

But yeah, there are some good third-party download managers out there.
I'm sure it's not hard to find something better than Download
Director.
