Actual cost for software, assuming a SWMA contract in place with IBM, Zero.

Most consultants will charge between $2,000 to $4,000 depending on the
complexity of the system, and the relative experience of the consultant.
The better more experienced AND CERTIFIED BY IBM the consultant is, the
higher the fee. I always fix the fee for my customers because I know what
it will take on their system.

I agree to a point, Jim. But if IBM still has an OS under support, they
should keep it up to date, especially the security related items that they
never got right in V7R1 anyhow. Either drop support for V7R1, or keep it up
to date. Isn't that what customers pay "support and maintenance" fees for?

Budgets are very tight these days and an OS upgrade just so SSL will work
"as it should" on a supported OS version seems like a ransom.

Hearing from my customers than even a couple hundred dollars will take work
to get out of the boss, along with the countless robo calls and emails about
my business being approved for credit and the many credit card offers is
giving me an uneasy flashback feeling to 2008-9.

I do honestly wish everyone would stay up to date.. it would make my life
easier a an ISV. But, the reality is, as we know, the OS upgrade on the IBM
i is normally the last thing to get budgeted for.

What is the average cost to upgrade from V7R1 to V7R3? I'd be curious...

With all due respect to those that like V7R1, V7R2 has been out for

We are in that same time warp that V5R4 created by IBM holding onto
support even though V6R1 and V7R1 had been out for several years. I
don't want IBM spending a dime on new things for V7R1, I'd rather them
continue to develop V7R3. Apply back to V7R2 where it's reasonable.
I would love it if IBM would simply announce the end of support for
V7R1 and folks spent the next year getting the upgrades done.

There are significant changes to security and other things inside V7R2
and more so in V7R3. If that's a concern for your organization then
an upgrade should be first on the list of projects. While I don't
quite get as insistent as Rob with the "upgrade now" message I completely
agree with it.

What I really don't get is why companies will spend millions keeping
the Microsoft environments completely up to date with patches every month,
but
they won't give the workhorse in the data center the same due. I try to
suggest PTFs twice to three times a year and I'm told "no that system
is to critical to be down that long". Meanwhile the entire Intel
suite is down for two hours overnight to apply patches.

Yes. Upgrade.

I agree if IBM is saying they won't update V7R1 (which is a bloody shame).
