Like Rob said, it's a server vs client question, and it doesn't really matter if the server is running iBMi, Linux or Unix.
The big things for me are firewalls and routing, both of which operate on IP address.

Why aren't you naming your devices and then letting them do as they wish with their IP addresses? I mean, thats the reason why we use names everywhere else in the Internet world.
