Basically what the issue with porting newer ciphers down to 7.1 is hinged
on is a core part of 7.2.
<snip>
The ability to configure multiple certificates for a secure environment
was added. Multiple Certificate Selection allows a secure environment to
enable Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) certificates
while still allowing RSA certificates.

This is not the only kind of stuff that is dying on 7.1 prior to the end
of support of 7.1.
JDK 6 will reach End of Support for both 7.1 and 7.2 in December of 2017.
It's also in this documentation:
http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/ShowDoc.wss?docURL=/common/ssi/rep_ca/0/897/ENUS917-080/index.html&lang=en&request_locale=en

If you look at Oracles site you will notice:
End of Public updates:
Java 6 Feb 2013
Java 7 Apr 2015
Java 8 (Targeted for Sep 2017). Unlike IBM they do not promise a years
notice. However they've not given less so I expect this to be extended.
The above was for "Public updates"

Premier support ends
Java 6 Dec 2015
Java 7 Jul 2019
Java 8 Mar 2022

So IBM's already carried Java 6 too long.
