Argh. Of course; should have stated "greater-than sign(s) (and a space)".

I should have stuck with merely suggesting use of the reply function of an email client or news client, preferably directly from the messages vs the digest, because "the 'reply' feature should automate both the continuum of the subject line *and* contextual quoting." -- as there was little reason to have attempted to describe _how_ that /works/.
