Yes, well sort of, it can't be a PC in the instructions, it must be another
IBM i. You use the NFS method of update/upgrade. I can be done with LICPGM
and PTFs. With the initial load of the OS (LIC and OS) I managed to get it
to work from a PC but it's not supported that way by IBM. I think you can
use a NIM server with the newer version of the HMC but I have not checked
that out yet, since I don't have customers that would use it.

See redpaper: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpapers/pdfs/redp4937.pdf

See:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/power/i/nfs_optical_upgrade.pdf

The command to start a remote install looks awful but when you figure out
that you are doing the command on the HMC and it's a command followed by a
series of Name/Value pairs, it starts to make sense.

You could also load the optical images on the HMC and use the HMC to load
it, but that's a real pain because the HMC will not act as an autoloader so
every time it calls for a new DVD you have to mount it in the HMC interface.

A somewhat related question ... is there a way to put the OS ISO's for a
system to be upgraded in a shared directory on another system (like a PC),
mount the shared directory, and create the image catalog there instead of
copying the ISO's to the system being upgraded?

What about putting the ISO's on another i?

Thanks!
