Good article by IBM's Jesse Gorzinski on how to set bash as your default shell.

Can you suggest a client?
PuTTY doesn't. Git Bash (Windows) and Bash (Linux) both keep a command history normally, but not when doing SSH.
I don't currently have 5733OPS 7 installed. Does it keep a command history?

Depends on the shell you're using, not necessarily the client. I don't believe the default bsh saves history. Switch to a different shell...bash is fun if you've got OPS option 7 loaded.
