I think that's good advice since it will assist in the learning curve for
Unix environments.

Unbuntu is good and a very reasonable choice, but I prefer CentOS or
RedHat's Linux since that is the version most often found on POWER equipment
and the transition to the POWER version is almost seamless.

Discipline recommended for those becoming interested in shell programming /
perl / php / node.js etc. and all the 5770 OPS toys:

Set up a Linux box on your desk (Ubuntu is a good choice) download ACS and
start using Linux as your workstation in preference to Windows.

Can you suggest a client?

PuTTY doesn't. Git Bash (Windows) and Bash (Linux) both keep a
command history normally, but not when doing SSH.

I don't currently have 5733OPS 7 installed. Does it keep a command
history?

Depends on the shell you're using, not necessarily the client. I don't
believe the default bsh saves history. Switch to a different
shell...bash is fun if you've got OPS option 7 loaded.
