I'd argue that anyone running 7.1 should be putting on a newer JDK anyway for a number of reasons.
1 - JDK 6 is unsupported by Oracle.
2 - To start prepping their applications to use JDK 7 or 8 (8 will have greater longevity) for their OS upgrade.

So, what better time to add a newer JDK then right before putting on PTF's, which you were planning on doing anyway because of the HTTP group you were installing.

If you load 7.1 HTTP Group PTF level 52 with ONLY Java 6 installed then
your HTTP Admin server will break. You need Java 8 64-bit AND one of Java
7 32/64-bit installed. HTTP Group 52 removes Java 6 support from the HTTP
Admin server. Check the HTTP Group 52 cover letter.

Saw a post recently on Linked In from Steve Pitcher where simply applying
the latest PTF's to a 7.1 machine could get the HTTP Admin server to stop
working.
Apparently it is best if you ensure that you have Java 7 and/or Java 8 on
your machine and not just Java 6.
