IPLs reclaim temporary storage. I have 298GB in temp storage on one lpar
alone. Which is probably more than the total disk space on his V4R3
machine.

DSPSYSSTS
Auxiliary storage:
System ASP . . . . . . : 7307 G
% system ASP used . . : 83.8611
Total . . . . . . . . : 7307 G
Current temporary used : 298546 M
Peak temporary used . : 350289 M

However too frequent IPLs can have a negative impact on performance. Some
of this temporary storage is Db2's version of AI to memorize how to run
particular queries for the best performance. You lose that at every IPL
and it has to start over. Ever notice how certain jobs seem to run slower
on Monday? It's not just a hangover from the weekend.
