My guess, and don't hold me to this, is that the script responds too
quickly before the other side is ready.

Having used expect since 1993, let me say that writing your own script is a
thankless task. I never do it anymore, and I use expect daily.

Grab a Linux box, go through the motions with autoexpect watching, and
autoexpect will write it for you.
