Without being able to run an interactive session, I really think you are
playing pin the tail on the donkey. I think we just have one script that we
share between two different servers. All the rest of the servers have their
own scripts because the prompts are different. This one sends password:
when it wants the password and sftp> when it wants a command. Looking at
another one it appears that it sends login -> when it wants the password
and the command prompt is just a $. I've never used autoexpect that Jack is
suggesting, but I've always basically done the same thing. Get to a command
line and run the sftp session interactively and write down the prompts.
Then use those to create my expect sessions.

it is not working with 2 out of 2 non-iseries servers I'm testing
against...
but works with an internal iSeries sftp server...
the outside company provided logs but did not tell me nothing.
the internal network guys said that each time i'd attempt connection wtih
the internal sftp server I"d get blacklisted... they fix and I'd retry and
it would blacklist me.
I'll try your script...

Your log seems to have clipped anything after a comma. eg. this

I'm not sure whether the missing data is necessary, but it would

In any event, based on what is in the log it would appear that
logsending a password packet your remote server is not replying butinstead
just closing the connection. That seems odd to me. The server's
accessmight
shed some light on the problem, but of course you don't have
to
that. You may have to contact the system owner and see if they
