If in the connection string I simply put the system name i.e. smb://ideveloper <smb://ideveloper> then it clearly connects because it then produces a list of the available shares - and it is the correct list as per GO NETS and the web thingy.
However, as soon as I select the one i need I am back to the "URLs of type smb: are not supported by this server - which is silly 'cos it just showed me a list of them,
Hopefully this will give someone a hint.
