Help text on the ls subcommand say it gives only a list of the file 
names - it does mention dir, which gives more information, somewhat like 
that which ls gives in QSH and otherwhere.

It's perhaps an unfortunate coincidence that ls is both an FTP 
subcommand and a command line in Linux, etc.

I think it's fair to say that IBM are following the crowd with FTP - 
both ls and dir behave the same in a Win 10 Powershell window.

I've had some of the same experience, not being sure which [sub]command 
to use in different environments.
