I did not see anything in the documentation that required VIOS 3.x.x.x for
any version of AIX 7.2. I do see a VIOS 3.x.x.x requirement for AIX and IBM
i to be in later release and TR levels. Am I reading this wrong?
I have several customers that won't be going to 3.x.x.x very soon due to
what I perceive as the pre-reqs that they won't be able to meet in the short
term.

Thank you.
We're interested because the latest versions of AIX seem to be going with
VIOS 3.x.
Yesterday was an interesting chicken vs egg thing.
Consultants upgraded AIX to a high 7.2 version. It failed badly and they
had to back it out. I'm wondering if it is a VIOS issue...
I've got a sandbox machine that is still on P8 I could do first.

Rob:
Unless your upgrading a test box I would not want to be near the first of
the group that puts up 3.1.x.x in VIOS. I've got 2.2.6.32 running most
everywhere now and it's solid. I'll wait for the .20 update at least
before
I consider it in a production environment.
As to the upgrade, the article you cite is so full of AIX and VIOS are the
only OS under the planet that it makes it nearly worthless. How many IBM
i
shops have a fully functional NIM server up and running? Very low
percentage with a decimal point in front.
I'll do the upgrade on my own system most likely next week. I will do the
double bump, upgrade to 3.1.0.0 first then apply the fixpack to 3.1.0.10.
Figure it's like loading or upgrading IBM i then putting on the PTFs.
The process is reasonably straight forward as you have done before, just
check out the pre-requisites a bit harder and a slightly different
command.
Why they are forcing a backup and restore I have not yet figured out.

I am at vios 2.2.6.31.
I want to get up to the latest level of 3.
I figured I would upgrade to 2.2.6.32 first.
I've done a few of these within level 2. I have the steps down pretty
good.
Going to 3 is a whole different animal. Kind of like the difference
between
applying PTF's and doing a release upgrade. Instead of updateios you use
viosupgrade.
<snip>
Upgrading from VIOS version 2.2.4 and above The VIOS must first be
upgraded
to 3.1.0.00 before the 3.1.0.10 update can be applied. To learn more
about
how to do that, please read the information provided at

rate_viosupgrade_methods.htm

A wiki article is at

Does anyone have any "real world" examples? Or a cheat sheet they follow?
The documentation on updateios is pretty good compared to this.
