I agree with Larry here, restore/upgrade is the way to go. Slip installs do
far more than just load the new software. It will update all the IBM i
files to new formats and set up the new version properly.

With the save/restore on top of method, almost certainly you'll have objects
that need to go into QGPL and QUSRSYS. They will be at the old version
while everything else is new.

That just issues Al Barsa's "MAKEAMESS" command.

(jeeesh, that's the second reference to him in less than an hour, yikes...)

What's the difference between these two methods (besides the obvious
digital vs physical media)? Is there a difference?

One is supported (Install and upgrade) and the other is 'on you' because you
will miss something using the save files!!

Finally got the boss to approve the funds and have gained access to a 7.3

I haven't done an OS upgrade in 6 years, and haven't migrated to a new
machine since 2006, so I'm a little out of my element.

What's the best way to get migrated from 7.1 to 7.3? The two suggested
methods from the vendor are:

#1: Slip upgrade. Full system save via Go SAVE 21, FedEx them the
tape

Or

#2: FTP over SAVFs created using the individual SAV commands

What's the difference between these two methods (besides the obvious
digital vs physical media)? Is there a difference?
