A better question is: Is anyone on the list using IBM VTL's? Probably not. I use DD2500's from EMC.
I've heard a few people promote Sphinx.
I have one saleperson always peddling his other product, vault/400 or some such thing.

Caution: Some of these do NOT play with BRMS. Some of these use their own save/restore commands. I know of two local companies doing this. For the price (in a small shop) that may be perfectly acceptable. To me, it's not. My DD2500's from EMC play quite well with BRMS.
I've done bare metal restores after replacing all disk drives using this device.
I've saved in one location to one VTL in one data center, and restored from the replicated tape on the other VTL in the other data center to a different machine. For example HA Backup is done at one data center. So we take that production lpar (replicated) save and restore that on to our development lpar.

Subject: Supportted VTL libraries by IBM

While on the phone with BRMS support today, I mentioned that I might be going to a VTL library.
IBM support mentioned that the only supported VTL libraries are IBM's.
Even though the 3rd party VTLs may work fine, they are not supported by IBM.

I was seriously considering one of these 3rd party VTLs, but now I'm not so sure on the choice.

One of the goals of the VTL was to add a 2nd library, eliminating the daily manual tape handling to off-site storage.

Anyone in the group using non-IBM VTLs?

Thank You
