They will complain that they can clear it but it gets repopulated without breaking anything?  That's not an error.

But at that point, it's a user expectation issue, not a programming issue, unfortunately.  If your users would rather lose functionality because they can non-destructively clear a field, then I guess you just give your users less functionality.
