Of course the ratio varies by the way your change your data, but most of the customers I deal with have a pretty significant amount of data that they back up every night that just doesn't change. This may be files or programs that are static or it may be data in files that has reached a point where further changes don't hit it but it's still needed for reference, lookup, etc.

But the VTL vendors like to throw around 100 to 1 so 49 to 1 is clearly not an unexpected number. Replicating 80 gb would be simple and easy.

Happy to discuss options with iInTheCloud if you have interest.

If we get 49 to 1 de-dedup, that would result in 80gb backup needing to be dupped to remote VTL.

Yes Cyber.

Our side (Receiving) is 1Gbps. I believe the sender has 100M. This is a long distance link and runs over a VPN tunnel so encryption/decryption also play into throughput.

With the connection maxing out at 38 Mbps for this tape if you had 50 Mb you'd be good!!

10Gb is certainly overkill in this example but I don't recall how much tape data you end up with in your backups. That would certainly play.

Larry,

Yes the VTLs are connected with IP.

1) Was that with 2 Cybernetics VTL?
2) What size TCP/IP connection between the two sites?
3) Would 1gb suffice, or would 10gb be needed?

Yes the VTLs are connected with IP.

One example of a tape replicated overnight to our facility was 6 minutes and 8 seconds. During that time it was using 38Mbps average bandwidth.
The tape size was 70GB de-dupped 49 to 1 so less than 1.5GB actually had to transfer.

OF COURSE YMMV!
- You may back up more than 70GB nightly.
- You may not be getting 49 to 1 de-duplication.
- You may have a bigger pipe than 38Mbps or a smaller one.

From my perspective though if I knew that my backups were off-site that quickly every night, with no fingers, cases, carts, trucks or mountains involved I would be very happy! AND as has been mentioned you still have the local copy in case silly sally in accounting deee-stroys a file and needs it back with the quickness.

AND the recovery is flat per BRMS report. Known, trusted, works.

NEVER forget: "It's not about backup, it's about Recovery."

If the VTL is doing duplication, and BRMS is not involved, this implies that the remote VTL is not even connected to the Power I, only to the source VTL.
How are the two VTLs connected, TCP/IP?
What size pipe is needed between the two VTLs?

It doesn't.

However as the volume is complete on our end if you were to restore QUSRBRM from that volume then the data is available and as the volumn ID is identical you're good to go.

You are correct that BRMS is not involved in the duplication of that volume.

Larry,

When the duplication is done by the VTL, how does BRMS know about the duplicated volume?
Currently, my dups are done by BRMS, (autodup feature).

From what I'm reading with any of the VTL solutions, BRMS would no longer be doing the dup.
Is this correct?

Cybernetics.

The VTL does the replication. It replicates directly to another Cybernetics VTL. Replication is triggered when BRMS ejects the tape from the drive at the end of the backupp.

One of the secrets to excellent remote replication is excellent deduplication. With this you send less data, MUCH less. It's the VTL that does the deduplication and Cybernetics has some of the best deduplication capability at least for IBM i tapes.

I don't often chime in on this list, but having recently made a significant change in our backup strategy, I figure I have some experience.
We are located along the South Carolina coastline, otherwise know as "hurricane alley".
We were using BRMS along with a tape library and moving tapes offsite daily, which take time, money and resources.

Last year we purchased a VTL that behaves exactly like our IBM tape library. BRMS doesn't know it's not an IBM tape library.

We replicate the daily save to another VTL in the cloud. This replication is completed within one hour after the back to on-site VTL is complete.

As a side note we do a BRMS full system save once a week and this back up is replicated to the VTL in the cloud within one hour after completion.

Here's the real magic. We have a partition in this same cloud and during our test this past year, we were able to restore our partition from the VTL to bare metal in four hours, start to finish.

We highly recommend iInTheCloud for hosting the VTL and DR partition.

This stuff really works!

Backup must always be looked at as insurance is.

You CAN own a home without purchasing insurance against theft, or fire, or weather. But do you?

If your home burns or is flattened by a tornado or hurricane ore *reallybigtree how can you afford to rebuild your home. NOW I don't kow you so perhaps it's possibly that you are wealthy and can rebuilt with money from your bank account or from selling another asset. But most people cannot so they pay insurance because the risk is too high.

So it is with backup. You can say OK I will risk the fact that I do not have off-site backups. Hopefully it will never happen that will need it and if I do need it because my building burned down I will simply close my business. Or I can stand the time it takes to rebuild my computer from various pieces.

But most companies cannot afford to lose their computer system. And if you cannot then you must, for the continuance of the business, have a set of data off-site, readily accessible, to recover the computer and thus continue the business.

So the decision to spend the money is exactly the decision to purchase insurance.
