Illinois would have pulled you over, requiring proof of "Essential
Business".
Happened to me already on my way from Milwaukee to Chicago suburbs. I have
WI. Plates.
Jim: Banks are the worst possible place to store a tape that might be
needed for DR, unless, you have a week to get them.
Some of my customers have set up round robin home storage of tapes, one
person one day, second person second day, etc. They rotate around taking
tapes home, then bringing them back. Part of the instructions are to
include the tapes in the family bug out bag of essentials.
In the end the safest, best way is to get a VTL and replicate it to a
partner in a geographically different location. Hopefully that partner has
Hot Site recovery capability. (Agile does this for its customers, as do
many partners.)

Your concerns are unfounded. BTW did I mention that we had to delay our
move to one data center by two weeks due to civil unrest in the area? I
would have thought the large river two blocks away would have discouraged
them. BTW I did check the US government's site on flooding. The other side
of the river is much lower and that's where the 100 year flood should go.
You know I'm kidding on your concerns being unfounded, right?
Also, I was at a different DC in Grand Rapids Michigan just yesterday. Nice
to see the travel ban is loosened because that was delaying my drive up
there. Being a Hoosier now, using a rental car with Missouri plates, did
have me a little concerned.

I have been following this thread and something I don't often see in these
discussions is what is a responsible place to store tapes.
Even without the current difficulties due to COVID... What types of events
might inhibit your ability to get to your tapes. Here is SW Michigan we are
located about 40 miles or so from a couple of nuclear reactors. If we have
to evacuate because of a misfire, will our tapes require us to enter the
fallout zones to be retrieved? Not likely to happen. We get a few tornados
in this area, how likely is that a twister that takes our data center might
also take out our data storage location (remember 911 where the tapes were
stored in the basement of the towers). One nearby company I used to work
for has a feed and grain located across the street. There is a major rail
line (60+ daily trains) that I see many chemical cars running on. A
derailment and we repeat Oklahoma City. Could the after affects of a riot
or massive fire keep you from your tapes if you need them?
I don't see a bank vault as a viable location for tapes. Declare a disaster
at noon on Saturday with a Monday holiday and suddenly it is Tuesday (3
days) before you can access your tapes.
