Frankly I would never use OPNQRYF for new development.
Alternatives include:
- Embedded SQL. This requires the use of 57##-ST1. If you have the command STRSQL you have 57##-ST1 loaded. I use this all the time.
- Call Level Interface. I've been told it's somewhat comparable to coding ODBC calls in the PC world with CONNECT, etc. Never done it.
