Laura you could do a new script in PHP or Python that gives you finer grained control of the entire FTP process. 

Food for thought if you go in to re-engineering mode.

I don't know if your developers would be interested but if you go to https://www.think400.dk/downloads.htm you will find a utility call FTPOBJ that uses Scott's FTPAPI to FTP objects. Might give you a heads up on using Scott's utility. First rate.
