I am guessing, and a wild guess at that, that the hardware serial number and model will remain readily available. This will enable calling hardware support and still being able to see the serial number to report the ticket in.
I think Marc has a really good grasp of this. The virtual serial number will be a new feature that licensing can OPTIONALLY take advantage of. And that the options he mentioned like LPM (Live Partition Migration) or SRR (Simplified Remote Restart) will ensure that those who CHOOSE to license their software using the new virtual serial number can only run it on one machine at a time.
Again, I have no insider knowledge on this whatsoever. But this is my summary based solely on this discussion.
Oh, and yes there is a virtual model number also to go along with that virtual serial number. That I read elsewhere.
