Does anyone backup their i to USB?
USB what? USB is a bus. Backups are done do a certain storage medium. From later mails I learned you're talking about USB "storage sticks".
My personal opinion is that USB has been designed as a more versatile replacement for PS/2 and ADB, and in the end was grossly abused for storage attachment. With the expected outcomes of slowness, and missing reliability, seen on almost all platforms.
When it smells like AS/400|iSeries|IBM i, I strongly recommend (emulated) tape. Has the advantage of Bare Metal Restore, also.
