Just a follow-up...

Since there appears to be no difference in joblogs AFTER starting System
Debugger, wouldn't that indicate that message #2 in lower pane (2.
Communications error with <system name>) is relevant? Like there is no
connection????

Hello again,

I was granted *ALL access to STRDBGSVR
As of now, I have run this command from the command line.
If I try running it from 'Run SQL scripts', I get the expected error:
-- CPFAC00: Debug server router function already active.

So I assume it is running on the system... when I start System Debugger:

No change to System Debugger UI visually No change to System Debugger
behaviorally I still get the same 3 messages in the lower pane upon startup:
1. Attempting connection to <system name> (IP address) 2. Communications
error with <system name> 3. Attempting to start debug server on <system
name>

Those 3 messages repeat for every time I click 'Start Debug'.

I guess I should ask, what should I expect to see when I first start System
Debugger?
What toolbar/menu options should I expect to see enabled at startup?

Jeremy

Just a clarifying question...

If the command STRDBGSVR were added to our system's auto-start list, would I
still need authority granted to my user ID?

System level. The debug server is system-wide.

When a system starts up (i.e after an IPL) there are a number of auto-start
jobs triggered that start TCPIP servers like HTTP, Telnet (5250), FTP, etc.
Your admin folks will understand. They just need to add the debug server to
the startup list.

Can you elaborate on your last comment? Those terms are foreign to

Are you saying that that command would be started automatically at the
system level? Or job level?

Glad I guessed right.

Ideally it should just be added to your system's autostart list so
that it is always started along with the TCT servers etc.

It is possible you don't have enough authority to start the debug server.
To check this try issuing the command STRDBGSVR from the green screen.

Hello,

I have never used the ACS System Debugger before but saw it as a
menu option so naturally I was intrigued by a GUI debugger that
could/would replace STRDBG.

Info:

* ACS v1.1.8.8 Build ID: 1380
* I am not an iSeries guy, but sometimes I am tasked with
writing/debugging Stored Procs/Triggers/Functions
* I run ACS as Administrator

I have a 'Run SQL Scripts' query window open.

I select the 'System Debugger' option from the 'Run' menu.

This brings up the Sign On window. I sign on.

System Debugger window is now displayed.

* Almost everything (toolbar options, menu options) on this UI is
disabled, excepts for the 'Start Debug' command

* Selecting 'Start Debug' does nothing

* In status pane at bottom of window, I have the following three
messages:

1. Attempting connection to <system name> (IP address) 2.
Communications error with <system name> 3. Attempting to start
debug server on <system name> .

I don't see anything of relevance in the joblog, that I can tell.

Is there something that must be configured on the i in order for
this to work?

The 'Communications error with <system name>' in the lower pane is
confusing. Is the 3rd message in the pane a result of the 2nd message?

Communications seems fine as I can run queries, I can start and use
5250 emulation, I can peruse the system via iNavigator, etc.

Thanks,

Jeremy
