Subject: Virtual serial numbers

Ladies and Gentlemen:

The subject of virtual serial numbers came up on the List back in
October. I really didn't fully understand the discussion (and looking at
what I kept of it, I still don't fully understand it).

And now, we've received a customer question on the subject.

If a box has a virtual serial number, what serial number does QWCRSVAL
return? And is there any effect on the model number returned?

And how does having a virtual serial number affect LPAR information
returned by a MATMATR MI instruction?
