Does anyone ever pull that out other than to set the IP address for HMC or
Lan Console? I mean, once you have HMC or Lan Console set up than why not
use those to do any of those functions?

Depends on which version of said LAN console!

On newer machines it works fine with ACS. Yes it has limitations, like
it can't power the machine ON. ;-)

Only the old machines where you connecticated a cable to what LOOKED
like a parallel port (DB25 connection) that turned out to be a
completely unsupported function for the chip behind that port. It had to
be disabled because no computer in the last decade or more even HAD a
parallel port and even less likely than that the chip in said port was
compatible.

I'm also not particularly fond of that thing. Not only it looks and
feels cheap. I also fear that pulling it in and out "too often" might
destroy it. :-)

Yes. It wouldn't be such a problem if it weren't for the fact that some
years ago the virtual control panel on LAN Console stopped working and
then disappeared completely.
