Vern -- I'm not clear on the vintage, but yes, the evolution of PASE and
the yum repositories far exceed what was possible Back in the Day, as the
young folk say.
However, emacs has disappeared and only joe (an emacs clone of ancient
lineage itself) is found in the IBM repos.

Yes, it is better nowadays, and it will get better still.
