Plus it's pretty easy to config an HMC to also call home and notify you via email if there's an issue that crops up.
Our systems are configured to call home and I test them weekly. I'm sure many others here do the same. I have a WRKJOSBCDE that runs on all my partitions.
The command is
I then check WRKPRB to assure the system called home (IBM) and also I check the IBM case site to make sure the call home was received. There's a case created for each test.
Advanced job scheduler looks like this:
Display Command List

subject: Detect failed disk
We recently had a system with a failed disk drive go undetected.
I found a system table QSYS2.SYSDISKSTAT that looks like it will give me the information to detect disk or protection errors.
So I can use this and send notifications if a problem is detected.
But before I do that I would like to ask if there is an alternative that may be better.
