Not surprisingly, there are Python libraries that can do this, in a
manner analogous to Scott's HTTPAPI for HTTP. (One is even included
with Python, but is deprecated.)

That being said, Expect is almost certainly the most typical way to
script telnet.

And finally, I second Scott's skepticism about the whole approach. If
the inquiry was for more than sheer curiosity, then please share the
intended use case so that better options might be suggested.
