I assume you have a fairly recent machine with LPAR support.

If your system's resources permit, create a new LPAR, do a D mode IPL and see what happens. You even can do an actual restore for testing purposes, as long as the testing LPAR has no network connection to the outside world (leading to duplicate IP addresses, etc.).
