Congratulations on recognizing it's not the backup, it's the *restore*,
that's the critical step.

Aside from verifying the tape itself, I'd guess the system restore process
is well-documented, thoroughly tested, and close to bulletproof. I'd
test it but wouldn't obsess about it. The user libraries are what's more
important (usually) and you can test the restore in another partition, at a
vendor's site, or at some other site with lots of disk. Restoring journals
and journal receivers before their associated libraries is a critical step;
getting through restoring your user libraries and confirming journaled
processes (programs) work properly is a very big box you can check off.

If you're not doing it now, you should be committing your device and
communications configurations to source code. It's tempting and expedient
to CHG this and WRK that but recreating a freehand configuration is
time-consuming and error-prone even when you're relaxed; it's way worse
under pressure. RTVCFGSRC is your friend.

We do a full system save periodically on a weekly basis. I believe this is
a backup that we could boot from and do a bare metal restore. My question
is... how can we verify/validate the tape to be sure it's good for that
purpose?

My thinking was... perhaps we could boot off of it... and just not take
the step to actually do the restore.
