Vern, I can confirm that changing at the Edit ==> Preferences ==>
Appearance ==> Font is a permanent change.
I restarted my laptop this morning and the changed font was still in use
and I did not change any hod files/configs.
   Cheers

Fonts in the list come from what is installed as monospaced fonts - many
are downloadable and are not the standard set for Windows.
So far as I can tell, both ways of seeing the font settings get to the
same set of options - the one in Communications will kill the session to
make the change permanent, so far as I can tell. To have a temporary or
testing setup, use Edit->Preferences->Appearance->Font - if you like what
you set it to, I recommend saving the HOD immediately - I don't remember
if it will remember you made the change when you close it.
