As far as I'm aware, the OS included http server in IBM i is in fact Apache.

He also mentioned OpenSSL. That's not even in our ecosystem (which uses JSSE), which may be a good thing: doesn't the use of OpenSSL require the now-deprecated Tomcat Native?

OpenSSL is essentially a library providing crypto functionality. OpenSSL doesn't require Tomcat, but Tomcat and many other OpenSource applications rely on OpenSSL to provide crypto functionality.
