Peter: Have you tested Yahoo groups ( http://groups.yahoo.com )? The mailings haven't had ads in any I've seen. Ads have only appeared on the web pages themselves and there's rarely a need for anyone actually to go to one of the pages if a mailing list is all it's used for. I'm sure there are others, but I used eGroups before Yahoo swallowed them and I've created various Yahoo groups since. It's what I'm familiar with and I'm comfortable with them. They don't seem likely to go away before others might. Moderation is an option. The group can be private, invitation only. Various goodies such as polls are available. The basic stuff is free, though I think you can purchase extras such as storage for digital photos or whatever. Create a group that has just you plus a temporary e-mail address that you create somewhere (Netscape, HoTMail, wherever) and test it using your two addresses. Maybe it's good enough.
