Hi Bob -

So Ken, what is the best way to learn something about Linux?

I've got an O'Reilly book: Learning Red Hat Linux which comes with RH 8. I know,
that is down level a bit, but I'm staying with RH 8 till I'm done with the book.
I figure then I'll upgrade.

This book however is aimed at users and isn't very technical. I'd love to hear
what you think I should look at next.

The O'Reilly books are supposed to be among the best. That said, as it happens, I only have one O'Reilly book, "Learning the bash Shell" (second edition).

A book that I found really good was "Linux Administration Handbook" by Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder, and Trent R. Hein; published by Prentice Hall PTR. It's $50 paperback, but it's worth it. It's just under 900 pages and has 29 chapters.

For iptables "Linux Firewalls Second Edition" by Robert L. Ziegler, published by New Riders, is considered pretty close to definitive. I had my basic firewall rules in place before I read it, but I've done some tweaking based on the book and have a few more pieces yet to tweak.

When I bought Red Hat 9, I bought it from Red Hat, and also bought the manuals from them. It was more to support Red Hat with my dollars than because I really wanted the manuals, which is a good thing because the manuals are pretty useless.
