Any thing you do that is going to be fairly simple will cost you something. If I was doing what you want to do, I would look for a used parallel port tape backup drive like the Iomega Ditto drives.... or something similar. A quick check of Ebay showed at least one with two tapes for under ten dollars when I looked. Another thing you could do, is get a PCMCIA CDRW drive. Again, used ones wouldn't be too much. You don't need the newest hardware to work with that older machine.
