I'm leaning towards the FAT/directory entry being corrupted.

I found a reference on Symantec's site that discussed using DISKEDIT to
delete a directory that is otherwise undeletable, by plugging that bit that
tells the OS that it is deleted.  But I don't know that deleting the
directory that way automatically makes the files disappear (ala DELTREE).
That will be my final gasp before I plug in the Win98 install disk tonight.
