A few years ago I'd heard that Linux made a better DC than NT, using its Samba support and the fact that Linux was much more stable. Has Linux kept up with the latest stuff and can it still function as some kind of controller - note --I'm fairly ignorant of this stuff.

Jeff,

It has to be Windows Server OS to be a domain controller.

I would be careful about eliminating WINS, unfortunately. Active
Directory does not need it, but if you have older applications that
depend on NetBIOS resolution, you may still need it. We still run it
just to be safe. On DNS, the Windows DNS is "Active Directory Aware".
I think it is possible to run DNS somewhere else, but the easiest thing
is to run it on the domain controllers.

IE, Put W2K or XP on them and you're good to go? Or does it have to be
a Windows Server OS?
