That sounds odd, I don't recall ever having a problem like that.

I wonder if the Product Key structure/algorithm is different for Upgrade 
and Full versions.  Either way, it should have worked on the original copy 
it came with.  If it didn't, then it was likely an activation issue.  If 
you enter in the Product Key, and the installation accepts it and 
continues the install, then the Key was not the problem.
