There shouldn't be any reconfiguration. I've done it a few times and it just works, out of the box. Plug her LAN cable into the router, plug the DSL Modem cable in the Router's WAN slot and you should be up. If not, swap it back. Two minutes, max.

I am curious why you don't use a router and run both machines over the DSL?

Booth:

A few years ago it would've been easier. I could change just about any
component of any computer in the house without a second thought. But then...

The clue is in the last sentence below, the one that begins "My wife is
attached...".

Ever since she _really_ got into this e-mail and web stuff, etc., I don't dare
interfere with her setup unless I can assure her that... well, that I won't
interfere with her connection for more than a short while.

I have the router at home for this. Her PC has the software from the ISP
(CenturyTel, the _only_ choice) that talks through the modem. If I disconnect
the modem and activate the router, I'd better be ready to reconfigure her PC
for the router ASAP.

To convert the house network to work through CenturyTel's DSL via router and
simultaneously convert her PC from something that works very well to something
that _might_ work if I can talk with a qualified support tech, I want to be
prepared. I don't want to get into Saturday support where I have some intern
manning the call center when DHCP gets messed up between _my_ local network and
CenturyTel because I did something stupid or whatever.

I'm going to do it on a weekday, starting in the morning. That means planning a
day off work. And it means a day off work that she doesn't know about ahead of
time because she'll have _something_ scheduled for me.

Beginning to get the picture?

In case you haven't yet BTDT, I have a warning: Don't ever, *EVER* expect
to go back to dial-up if you get broadband at home. I set up my parent's PC
and they have dial-up; OMG, pain, THE PAIN!! I might give up my beer before
I give up broadband. I know, I know, hopefully I never have to make that
choice, but...
I have both DSL and dialup at home. My wife is attached DSL all the time via
DSL modem, but I use dialup at my usual PC almost exclusively. ...
