Did you look at Puppy Linux?

No - but I will now - thanks.

I have presently abandoned trying to work with the low end PII machine I was
trying to work with and switched to a much more powerful ThinkPad that I had
lying around.  That works fine with Ubuntu but for some reason it won't
connect to the network.  It "sees" the card and if I use a fixed IP it can
even ping itself - it just can't see the network - goodness knows why.  I
haven't the time to play any more - gotta do real work.
