As it happens David, the link in this case is in an e-mail - but that is not
always the case.  In some cases it is simply  a link on a web page.

Here's the difference.  If I click on the link (in the e-mail or on the web
page) the browser opens with the URL showing correctly in the window.  But
the screen remains blank.  If I a) Cut and paste the link that is now
showing in the browser into the Open dialog of Acrobat then the file is
displayed correctly. Or b) If I right click on the link and do "Save As" and
then select Open from the download monitor it again opens correctly.

To me this indicates that the URL is correctly formed - but I have no idea
where to go from here.
