I would like to move files from my laptop to a desktop (and v.v.) via a
cable; no network involved. I'm thinking a USB cable and Windows XP just
"knows" what to do when the connection is made. FWIW, the laptop is XP Pro
and the desktop is XP Home, both at SP2.

I've seen file transfer kits at the computer store ... although I don't
think XP 'just knows' how to use it.

Why not network? All you would need is a simple switch or crossover
cable to connect the systems.
