Yes and no, actually ... depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

If you want to compare against the symbol 'dollar sign', then you need to compare against the correct hex value for dollar sign in the CCSID you're operating in. Retrieving the text for a dollar sign from a message file is the easiest way to do that.

But what you really programed was 'is the value of fielda equal to the hex value of '$' in the CCSID I compiled the program in?' Maybe not what you intended, but this is what it does.
